Below are several frequently asked questions about our new EMV VISA® Credit Cards.

  • What is EMV?
EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard and VISA®. It is a security measure used worldwide to authenticate credit card purchases. The technology is stored in a metallic square chip located on your credit card. Fort Knox Federal Credit Union has elected to provide this extra level of security to create a more fraud-resistant and secure payment method for you.
  • Is EMV safe?
EMV makes paying with your credit card safer than ever. The chip contains security credentials unique to you which makes your credit card difficult to use if lost or stolen. Your card information is encrypted upon payment so that none of your personal information is stored with a merchant.
  • How do I use a card with an EMV chip?
Using your new card is easy! First, determine if the terminal at which you are paying is chip-enabled. If so, insert your credit card into the terminal, chip-end first. You will leave your card in the terminal while it is authenticated and until the transaction is processed. Follow the prompts on the terminal to authorize your transaction. Finally, remember to remove your card once the transaction is complete.
  • What if the merchant doesn’t have a chip-enabled terminal?
If the terminal is not chip-enabled, conduct the transaction as you normally would by swiping the magnetic stripe on the card.
  • How do I get a FKFCU VISA® Credit Card with EMV?
Currently, all newly issued credit cards will contain the EMV chip. Replacement credit cards for lost or stolen cards will also be issued EMV-ready cards. Beginning in October 2015, all expiring cards will be reissued with EMV-ready cards.

If you would like to replace your current FKFCU credit card with an EMV-ready card prior to your scheduled reissue date, a $10 fee will be assessed. Please call 1-800-285-5669 to place this request.
  • Will my terms or rewards of my Visa® account change?
No. Your new cards will have the same rate, limits, rewards and low monthly payments as the previous card.
  • Will the PIN number for my card change?
No. The PIN number which allows you to perform cash advances at the ATM will remain the same.
  • Are my due dates changing?
No. Your new card will continue to cycle on the same schedule as before.
  • Will there be any added charge specifically for EMV?
No. There is no additional costs to the member for the EMV enhancement
  • Will my account number change when my existing credit card is renewed?
Cards issued via standard renewal will keep existing card number.

Names on Visa® credit cards may no longer exceed 21 spaces. Because of this Visa®-mandated change, we have adjusted the name displayed on some cards to stay within this limit. Please be sure to check your card to be sure you know how your name is displayed.
